ATAS Certificate Explained: Who Needs One and How to Apply

ATAS Certificate Explained: Who Needs One and How to Apply

Studying certain science, engineering or technology courses? You may need an ATAS certificate before your visa is approved. Here is how it works.

ATAS stands for the Academic Technology Approval Scheme, run by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). If your course falls into a sensitive subject area — mostly advanced physics, certain engineering fields, materials science, and some computing and biological sciences — you need an ATAS certificate before you can be issued a Student visa, and often before your university will even confirm your CAS.

Who actually needs one

Your university will tell you if your specific course requires ATAS — it depends on the exact Common Aggregation Hierarchy (CAH) code attached to your course, not just the subject name in plain English. Broadly, courses at postgraduate research level (PhD, and some research-heavy master's) in these areas are most commonly affected:

  • Nuclear, aerospace, and certain mechanical or electronic engineering specialisms
  • Materials science and some chemistry
  • Computer science with a security, AI or advanced computing focus
  • Some biological and biomedical sciences with dual-use potential

Nationality matters too

ATAS requirements depend on both your subject and your nationality — some nationalities are exempt for certain subjects. Your university's admissions or compliance team will confirm whether you personally need one; do not assume based on a friend's experience with a similar-sounding course.

How to apply

  1. Get your course details from your university — you need the exact course title, CAH3 code, and start date, usually provided once you have an offer.
  2. Register and apply online through the official ATAS application system.
  3. Complete the research/personal statement section — describe your intended research or study focus honestly and specifically; vague statements slow down review.
  4. Wait for processing — the stated standard is up to 20 working days, though it can run closer to six weeks in busier periods (typically July to September), so apply as early as your offer allows.
  5. Receive your certificate by email and forward it to your university, since many will not issue your final CAS without it.

Common mistakes that cause delays

  • Applying too late — many students apply only once they have their CAS, when it should usually be the other way round for ATAS-required courses.
  • Vague research descriptions — "I want to study engineering" is far weaker than a specific description of your intended focus, modules or dissertation area.
  • Wrong CAH code — always use the code your university gives you, not one you find generically online, since codes are course-specific.
  • Certificate expiry — an ATAS certificate is valid for a set period tied to your course start date; if your start date changes significantly, you may need to reapply.
💡
Apply the moment you accept your offer

Because ATAS can take six weeks in peak season and your CAS may depend on it, treat your ATAS application as one of the very first things you do after accepting a place, not something to leave until visa paperwork season.

What happens without one

If your course requires ATAS and you do not have a valid certificate, your university generally cannot issue a full CAS, and UKVI can refuse your Student visa even if every other document is in order. This is one of the more avoidable refusal reasons — it is entirely within your control and free of charge.

Where this fits in your wider visa timeline

ATAS is usually the very first document in your visa journey if your course needs it, ahead of your CAS and financial evidence. See our complete UK Student Visa guide for the full sequence, and our CAS letter explained guide for what happens next. If you would like your document checklist reviewed against your specific course and nationality, our pre-arrival planning support can help you sequence everything correctly, and parents can track each milestone through the parent portal.
