Heathrow to Oxford: Every Way to Get There, Compared (Coach, Train, Taxi, Pickup)
The Airline coach, the train via Paddington, taxis and a pre-booked meet-and-greet — costs, journey times, luggage rules and which option makes sense after a 7-hour flight.
You have landed, cleared the border and collected two 23-kg suitcases. You are tired, it may be raining, and Oxford is 55 miles away. Here is what each option genuinely costs and how it feels with luggage.
Option 1: The Airline coach (Oxford Bus Company)
Runs every 20–30 minutes, 24 hours a day, from the Central Bus Station (Terminals 2 & 3) and Terminal 5. Around 90 minutes to Gloucester Green in the city centre or the Thornhill park-and-ride. £23 one way, students £18 with the app.
- Pros: cheap, frequent, reliable, Wi-Fi and sockets.
- Cons: you must haul luggage across the terminal to the bus station, then from Gloucester Green to your accommodation. No help with bags. Cowley and Headington require another bus or taxi from the centre.
Option 2: Train (Elizabeth line + GWR)
Elizabeth line to Paddington (about 30 min), then GWR to Oxford (about 60 min). £30–£45 depending on time. Two changes with suitcases at Paddington, and Oxford station is a 15–20 minute walk or a £8 taxi from most colleges.
Option 3: Taxi or private hire
Black cabs from the rank charge £110–£150 on the meter. Pre-booked private hire (including our own drivers) is a fixed £95–£130 depending on vehicle. Door to door, help with bags, no changes.
Every Arrive UK package — Essentials, 2-Week and 4-Week — includes a named driver waiting in arrivals with your name, flight tracking so we adjust if you are delayed, a bottle of water, an activated UK SIM card, and a live tracking link your parents can watch from home. On the drive we talk through your first week. It is the part of the service families tell us they value most.
If you are arriving alone and late
Coaches run all night, but arriving at Gloucester Green at 2am with luggage is not pleasant. If your flight lands after 22:00, a pre-booked pickup is worth the money for safety alone. Never accept a lift from someone approaching you in arrivals.
Luggage, SIM and cash on arrival
- Trolleys are free at Heathrow; keep one until you reach the coach or car.
- Buy nothing at the airport except water. SIM cards and adaptors are half the price in town (or included in your package).
- You do not need cash. Cards and phones work everywhere, including the coach.
Other airports
| Airport | To Oxford | Notes |
|---|---|---|

We collect from all of them — Gatwick and Birmingham at a small surcharge shown in the booking wizard.
What happens when you arrive at your accommodation
Check-in desks at halls close in the evening; private landlords need appointments. Tell us your landing time and we coordinate keys with the accommodation office — or, if you arrive after hours, our first-night option puts you in a hotel with the drive to your room the next morning.
