Where to Live in Oxford: Cowley vs Headington vs Jericho vs Summertown for Students
A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide with rents, commute times to both universities, food, safety and vibe — so you choose an area, not just a room.
Oxford is small — you can cycle across it in 25 minutes — but its neighbourhoods feel very different. Choose the area first, then the room.
Cowley Road / East Oxford
The international students' heartland. Turkish, Lebanese, Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants and grocers, halal butchers, late-night cafés, the O2 Academy, independent shops. Diverse, lively, affordable. Shared houses dominate. Ideal for Brookes (15-minute bus or cycle) and Oxford University (10–15 minute cycle).
- Rent: £650–£850 room, £1,000–£1,200 one-bed.
- Vibe: busy, multicultural, young.
- Watch: some streets are noisy on Friday and Saturday nights.
Headington
Home to Oxford Brookes' main campus and the John Radcliffe Hospital. Quieter and more suburban than Cowley, with a proper high street (Tesco, Waitrose, pharmacies, cafés). Purpose-built halls (Clive Booth, Cheney) and family houses converted to student lets.
- Rent: £700–£900 room, halls £900–£1,200 ensuite.
- Vibe: student-town, calm, green.
- Watch: 25–30 minutes into the centre by bus.
Jericho
Canal-side terraces, independent cinema, excellent coffee, walking distance to the Radcliffe Camera and the science area. Beloved by Oxford University graduates. Expensive and competitive.
- Rent: £850–£1,100 room, studios £1,200+.
- Vibe: bookish, pretty, quiet after 10pm.
Summertown
North Oxford's village high street: Marks & Spencer, good restaurants, leafy streets, many college-owned graduate houses. Family-friendly and safe; a 10-minute cycle to the centre.
- Rent: £800–£1,000 room.
- Vibe: grown-up, polished, a bit sleepy.
Botley / Osney / West Oxford
Across the river from the station. Cheaper, well connected to the train, near the Westgate. Good for students who travel to London often.
