Your First Week in Oxford: The Complete Day-by-Day Checklist

Your First Week in Oxford: The Complete Day-by-Day Checklist

A realistic seven-day plan for a new international student — from the drive from Heathrow to registration, bank, GP, SIM, bedding, buses and your first Friday prayer.

This is the plan we run with every student on our 2-Week package, compressed into one week. Do it in this order and by Sunday evening you will be set up, registered and slightly less exhausted than everyone else.

14admin tasks in a typical first week
3documents you need everywhere: passport, CAS/offer letter, accommodation contract
Day 2when the important appointments should happen
100%of our students who finish the list by day 7

Day 1 — Arrival

  • Meet your driver (or take the Airline coach).
  • Collect keys, unpack the essentials, find the nearest supermarket.
  • Turn on your UK SIM. Message home. Sleep.
💡
If you land with us

Your driver hands you an activated SIM, a printed map of your area with the nearest halal shop, pharmacy and bus stop, and confirms your day-2 appointments. Your parents get the "arrived safely" notification and photo automatically.

Day 2 — The three big appointments

  1. University registration / enrolment. Bring passport, visa/eVisa, offer letter, qualification certificates. You leave with a student card and a bank letter.
  2. Bank account. Pre-booked appointment (why this matters), or open an app-only account on the spot.
  3. GP registration. Fifteen minutes online — here is how.

Day 3 — Digital and legal

  • Create your UKVI account for the eVisa, generate a Right to Rent code for your landlord (guide).
  • Collect your BRP if you were issued one.
  • Apply for a National Insurance number if you plan to work.
  • Send the council your student status certificate for the council tax exemption.
Time each first-week task takes when planned (minutes)

Day 4 — Living

  • Buy bedding, a duvet, a kitchen starter set (Argos, Wilko, Primark Home, IKEA delivery).
  • Set up your bus pass or buy a bike (getting around guide).
  • Register with the library and download the university apps.
  • Find your lecture buildings in daylight.

Day 5 — Food and faith

  • Locate your halal butcher and grocer — Cowley Road guide.
  • Find the nearest prayer room on campus and the Oxford Central Mosque for Jumu'ah.
  • Join the Islamic Society, your national society and one hobby society at the freshers' fair.

Day 6 — Money and admin

  • Set up standing orders for rent, add your card to Apple/Google Pay.
  • Log your first-week spending in the UniLife budget tracker.
  • Check your emergency numbers are saved: 999, 111, university security, your embassy.

Day 7 — Breathe

  • Walk the city. Christ Church Meadow, the covered market, Port Meadow at sunset.
  • Call home properly, with video.
  • Look at your timetable for week one and put the deadlines into the Deadline Guardian.
ℹ️
For parents following along

Every item above appears as a tick in the Pre-arrival & first-week checklist on the student dashboard, and the parent portal mirrors it in Arabic, Turkish, Bengali and Urdu. When the list is complete you both get a notification.

Things people forget

  • A UK plug adaptor (Type G) for your laptop — buy two.
  • Photocopies of passport and visa stored separately from the originals.
  • Your vaccination record for the GP.
  • Prescription medicines with the original label and a doctor's letter.
  • The address and phone number of your accommodation written on paper, in case your phone dies.
