Building a UK Credit Score From Zero: A Guide for International Students
You arrive with no UK credit history, which makes phone contracts, renting and later a mortgage harder. Here is how to build a score in 12 months without debt.
Credit history in your home country does not follow you to the UK. To the three UK credit agencies — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — you are invisible on day one. That is why the phone shop asks for a deposit and why some landlords want six months' rent upfront. The fix is not complicated; it just needs a year of consistency.
Step 1: Get on the electoral roll — or the alternative
UK citizens boost their score by registering to vote. Most international students cannot, so agencies rely instead on address stability. Use one address consistently on every account and avoid moving mid-year if you can.
Step 2: Open a bank account and use it properly
A high-street current account that receives regular money and pays regular bills is the foundation. See how to open one quickly. Set up direct debits for your phone and any subscriptions — paid on time, every month.
Step 3: A phone contract or a credit-builder card
- Phone contract: even a cheap £10 SIM-only 12-month contract reports monthly payments.
- Credit-builder card: Aqua, Capital One Classic, Tesco Foundation and Monzo Flex accept new arrivals. Spend £20–£50 a month and pay the full balance by direct debit. Never carry a balance — interest rates are high.
Every application leaves a "hard search". Two or three in a month looks desperate to lenders and lowers your score. Apply for one, wait six months, then consider another.
Step 4: Check your file every quarter
Experian, ClearScore (Equifax) and Credit Karma (TransUnion) are free. Check that your name, date of birth and address are correct and that no unknown accounts appear. Errors are common for people with names transliterated from Arabic or Urdu — make sure every account uses the exact spelling on your passport.
What does not help
- Salary size (agencies do not see it).
- Savings balance.
- Checking your own score (soft search, no effect).
- Buy-now-pay-later like Klarna — since 2025 some report, but late payments hurt more than on-time ones help.
Why bother?
By your final year a fair score means a normal phone upgrade, a rental without a guarantor, and — if you move to the Graduate visa — the ability to get a car loan or, eventually, a mortgage. Our Career Hub includes a "life admin" checklist that tracks these milestones alongside your job search.
Services like CreditLadder and Canopy report your rent payments to Experian for free. If you pay rent monthly by bank transfer, this alone can add 50–100 points in a year.
